heart of gold

nothing quite as lonesome sounding as a harmonica and acoustic guitar.

way before mtv's unplugged... this is neil young in 1971 when heart of gold was new.

I want to live,
I want to give
I've been a miner
for a heart of gold.
It's these expressions
I never give
That keep me searching
for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old.
Keeps me searching
for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old.

I've been to Hollywood
I've been to Redwood
I crossed the ocean
for a heart of gold
I've been in my mind,
it's such a fine line
That keeps me searching
for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old.
Keeps me searching
for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old.

Keep me searching
for a heart of gold
You keep me searching
for a heart of gold
And I'm growing old.
I've been a miner
for a heart of gold.

Imagine me, alone in my room, nothing lighting me but the empty blue glow of the computer screen and the small amount of light that filters though my black curtains. Playing my harmonica, no guitar, instead I'm being accompanied by a howling dog named Steve. I think to myself that he understands how I feel but I then realize that isn't true at all. Its just his response to the higher notes. Not the compassionate voice that I need.

I think of today's morning snow and wonder if nature has a sense of bitter irony.

from the same 1971 concert as the heart of gold video...

there's a delicate thread of wistfulness in all these songs,
and a gradual unraveling that always seems to end in longing.

Old man look at my life,
Im a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
Im a lot like you were.

Old man look at my life,
Twenty four and theres so much more
    Live alone in a paradise
That makes me think of two.

    Love lost, such a cost,
Give me things that dont get lost.
Like a coin that wont get tossed
    Rolling home to you.

Old man take a look at my life Im a lot like you
I need someone to love me the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes and you can tell thats true.

    Lullabies, look in your eyes,
Run around the same old town.
Doesnt mean that much to me
To mean that much to you.

    Ive been first and last
Look at how the time goes past.
But Im all alone at last.
    Rolling home to you.

Old man take a look at my life Im a lot like you
I need someone to love me the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes and you can tell thats true.

Old man look at my life,
Im a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
Im a lot like you were.

Now that you found yourself losing your mind
    Are you here again?
Finding that what you once thought was real
    Is gone, and changing?

Now that you made yourself love me
Do you think I can change it in a day?
How can I place you above me?
Am I lying to you when I say
    That I believe in you
    I believe in you.

Coming to you at night I see my questions
    I feel my doubts
Wishing that maybe in a year or two
We could laugh and let it all out

Now that you made yourself love me
Do you think I can change it in a day?
How can I place you above me?
Am I lying to you when I say
    That I believe in you
    I believe in you.

he may raise questions and point out our faults but neil young still offers a glimmer of hope in an unforgiving world.

    Old man lying
by the side of the road
    With the lorries rolling by,
    Blue moon sinking
from the weight of the load
And the building scrape the sky,
    Cold wind ripping
    down the allay at dawn
    And the morning paper flies,
    Dead man lying
by the side of the road
With the daylight in his eyes.

Don't let it bring you down
    It's only castles burning,
    Find someone who's turning
    And you will come around.

    Blind man running
    through the light
    of the night
With an answer in his hand,
    Come on down
    to the river of sight
    And you can really understand,
    Red lights flashing
    through the window
    in the rain,
Can you hear the sirens moan?
    White cane lying
in a gutter in the lane,
    If you're walking home alone.

Don't let it bring you down
    It's only castles burning,
    Just find someone who's turning
    And you will come around.

Don't let it bring you down
    It's only castles burning,
    Just find someone who's turning
    And you will come around.
